what is a quiet time?

bowl

Quiet time. We use so many phrases with the word “quiet” in them that I am not sure belong. “Quiet rest” for my kids typically means playing in their rooms for an hour or so to give me a semblance of sanity. “Quiet time” with the Lord consists of me literally carving out some amount of time, hopefully before the kids wake up, sometimes in the middle of the day hiding in the bathroom, and sometimes at night, after all are in bed, and all you hear are those weird zombie noises from the fridge.

What. Am I the only one who has a zombie fridge? Well, you are missing out, friend.

Here’s the point—find that time. It is there. I had it this morning, and while right now I feel refreshed, I know in a few hours I won’t. So I am going to need to refuel, both with coffee and the Word. Right now I am surrounded by paperwork, last night’s dishes, and throw pillows on the floor. It is not perfect, but it is time, and I am taking it. Everyone’s day looks different, everyone’s schedules are different, so this is written to all of you.

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Who is the one that overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:4-5

I have been praying lately for boldness. My husband a few weeks ago really spurred me on by saying, “you are ready to say the things that need to be said”. But to be honest? Those “things” that need to be “said” aren’t going to be heard when everyone is talking.

And by “everyone”, I mean social media, to-do lists, family, carpool lines, school zones, work deadlines. Everything.

You really know who you are and how you feel when you are alone, sitting in that chair or couch, no one is looking. No one to impress. No one to judge. Just you, there, reading and soaking it in and just begging for wisdom.

Are you ready to say bold things? I want to be. But for me? That starts in the quiet.

  1. I always love my quiet time. I need it. I actually feel *so* lucky to have grown up in the era before cell phones and social media where it’s easy to feel you must be interacting with the world every waking second. I really wonder what it will be like for our kids growing up perpetually “connected”. It makes me sad. You’ve got to be able to just sit with yourself…and just BE.
